“We get one opportunity in life, one chance at life to do whatever you’re going to do, and lay your foundation and make whatever mark you’re going to make. Whatever legacy you’re going to leave; leave it!” – Ray Lewis
As I stood on the sidelines last Saturday in Williamsburg and watched our team suffer a tough defeat and be dealt even more adversity, I knew in my heart, I had to step up.
These 94 guys are my brothers. We’ve given blood, sweet and tears over the past 11 months to get to this opportunity.
In my mind, I couldn’t let this opportunity pass this group by without giving it our best effort.
On Monday, I walked into Coach Rocco’s office and asked for the opportunity to play.
Coach and the entire staff have been 100-percent supportive of giving me the year to redshirt, learn and develop with the end goal of serving an even bigger role for the Spiders in coming years. I knew that he wanted to look out for the best interest of myself and my family. He asked me to sleep on it to make sure I wasn’t making an impulse decision.
I knew leaving that office that day that my decision wouldn’t change. I wanted to play. I wanted to take this opportunity, not for myself, but for my teammates, each and every one of us who have battled, fought and pushed each other through incredible tests of adversity.
What lies ahead of us is a new season. We’ve accomplished great things this season, but many more opportunities lie ahead of us. These challenges will not be easy, we will have to be at our best and that begins today.
Our chance to leave a legacy begins today at 2 p.m. and I can’t wait to step onto the field and knock on opportunity’s door.
