I am grateful to have been part of the Spiders tennis family for the past four years. Notice that I said “family” and not “team.” Currently, there are 11 guys on the tennis family, and our small roster allows us to form strong bonds that will last long after we graduate.
Naturally, tennis is an individual sport. When I started traveling the country for tournaments at age 11, I traveled with my father, Dimitri, and occasionally my mother, Delois. Some of the tournament players traveled with their coaches, but I mainly traveled alone.
So why do I consider my collegiate team to be a family? Two reasons: 1) we fight for each other on and off the court, and 2) we have a bond that will last a lifetime.
As I tied my shoes for my final ECU fall tournament this past weekend, I realized just how lucky I am to be spending my college career with a team that will always be family to me—well after I graduate in the spring.
