What’s In A Number – #33 Amy Duggan

“What’s In A Number” is the latest addition to SpiderVoices. In this feature, we’ll dive into the meaning behind some of the numbers that Spiders wear on their backs. This week, women’s basketball player Amy Duggan explains the meaning behind her #33.

I wear the number 33 for my Papa (grandfather).

I was introduced to the game of basketball by my dad, whose father had influenced him to play basketball when he was younger as well. My Papa had played basketball at Boston College, and was inducted into their Hall of Fame in 1987. In one of his high school games (before the three-point line) he scored 73 points. I wanted to be just like him.

When I was in the fifth grade, my Papa passed away. I had a really difficult time coping with his death, but I found solace in the game of basketball. I started wearing the number 33 in AAU, and carried it over to my freshman year in private school, wearing it all throughout my four years. For me, wearing the number 33 meant carrying out my Papa’s legacy and love for the sport.

Every time I step on the court, I feel like my Papa is with me. When the going gets tough, I can look down at my jersey and know that everything is going to be alright because I have my own guardian angel on the court. Wearing this number helps me feel closer to my Papa even though he cannot physically be here with me, and that is why I would not wear any number other than my favorite number: 33.
