“What’s In A Number” is the latest addition to SpiderVoices. In this feature, we’ll dive into the meaning behind some of the numbers that Spiders wear on their backs. This week, Spider soccer’s Lexi Prillaman explains the meaning behind her #10.
Ever since I was little, I’ve wanted to push myself to the limits and be the best. It didn’t matter what sport or activity that my parents put my sisters and I in, I wanted to be the best, whether gymnastics, basketball, field hockey and especially soccer.
Growing up, there was only one number in women’s soccer that was synonymous with being the best and that was #9 because of the great Mia Hamm. She was my hero growing up. I loved everything about her. To this day, I still have a #9 Hamm jersey hanging up in my closet.
As I grew older and travel soccer picked up, I came into a year that #9 wasn’t available, so I made the switch to #10.
#10 in soccer is like #23 in basketball. It’s what the greatest players wear. Just look throughout history, Maradona, Pele, Messi, Wayne Rooney, Neymar, Ronaldinho. All of them wear #10.
I know that #10 is special every time I put my jersey on. It pushes me to get the most out of myself and try to be the very best I can possibly be.
