“What’s In A Number” is the latest addition to SpiderVoices. In this feature, we’ll dive into the meaning behind some of the numbers that Spiders wear on their backs. This week, football player Ricky Segers explains the meaning behind his #42.
I recognize that being a kicker is unique. It’s a position that are unlike many others in sports. We spend a lot of time, by ourselves working on our craft.
I’ve always loved being in a position to help my team win. Being a kicker requires a great deal of competitiveness and composure, much like a closer in baseball.
And that’s how we arrive at me wearing the number 42.
When I arrived at Richmond, I was offered a few different 40 numbers to choose from, there was only one option in my mind, #42.
I’ve spent my entire life as a diehard Yankees fans with plenty of ups and a few downs. The whole time, Mariano Rivera was a consistent presence for Yankees fan.
He was the essence of being a Yankee. He displayed the two characteristics I respect the most in athletes, competitiveness and composure.
So Mo Rivera, #42 is for you.
